Ear Drops: Around the World

Between the Lines and Killer Instinct are collaborating again with the new series Ear Drops. Here, you will find brief reviews of songs new and old to give your playlists that extra personal touch.
This week, we’re taking your ears on a trip with a themed drop: Around the World. Every artist on this list hails from a different corner of the globe. Let the vibes sink in through your headphones of choice and enjoy the flight!
“I must be holding something strong, for me to know I can carry on,” Tems sings over a soul-journeying track. Her tale of redemption and rediscovery is a sign of the times we live in today. The heavy drums and bass line act as her compass, showcasing her strength and willingness to do anything to inspire change in her life. If the lyrics resonate, it creates an even more delectable experience. But even if you’re not feeling ready for change, the beat switch and textured production will keep you hooked!

Essaie Encore - Monsieur Nov ft. Joé Dwèt Filé (France/Haiti/China, 2023)
This song is a collaboration made in heaven for those who love French R&B. The track benefits from the cultural richness each artist brings: a Caribbean beat, intoxicating R&B silk, and a saxophone line that ties it all together. Monsieur Nov, a French artist of Chinese descent, joins Joé Dwèt Filé, a French-Haitian singer and creator of the Konpa hit “4 Kampé.” Here, they meet on a track about failing, again and again, to love a woman the way she deserves.

Marking My Time - Elmiene & BADBADNOTGOOD (UK/Canada, 2023)
Elmiene is a name you’ll want to remember. With an impactful tone and a soulful voice, he takes on a remix of his acoustic version of “Marking My Time.” A true student of poetry, Elmiene wraps his melancholy into a neat bow. The new imagining of his song is quite groovy in nature, but either version of this song will suffice. This resonates for those who are going through something strong enough to light your soul on fire!

Drive Me Crazy - Myles Lloyd (Canada, 2024)
Independent R&B artist from Montreal, Myles Lloyd’s recent project I’m Still Thinking of You is a treasure trove for your playlist. Lloyd masterfully walks that line between giving you what you love about the genre while remaining sonically distinct. In about two minutes and forty-five seconds, Myles lets a former lover know they took too long, so now he’s off it. Too good to be this short. Too relatable.
